The nail is one solid mass. So from the root it grows outward. If you don't believe me, mark the bottom edge with pen or something and over time it'll slowly move to the tip of the finger.Does a fingernail grow from the tip or the nail bed?
It grows from the bottom. Like when you out nail polish on and your nail starts to grow. The bottom where it was previously fully covered it now exposed with new nail.

it grows from the bottom. thats why finger nail polish grows out with a space on the bottom
