It's possible that you tore a part of the nail off the flesh while picking at something. It's also possible that you applied sudden force to your finger tip and cause the flesh to roll off from under the nail (like when you try to slide your hand on a surface and the friction on your finger tips or at the point of your fingerprints suddenly stops your hand). It could even be an ingrown nail. In any case, it sounds like an infection. I would apply some form of disinfectant medication and keep an eye on it. If it doesn't get better in a day or so, I would consult a physician (I doubt it'll come to that).Has anyone ever had a finger hurt real bad under the nail bed and then...?

Sounds like it is infected. It is possible you may have cut it or touched something that just triggered something bad and has grown into an infection. You can try Webmd.com for help, otherwise I'd go to the doc and see into some medications. Possible your going to need a direct injection on this one...
I hate to ask, but where's your finger been?
Sounds like you had an impact you are unaware of and you created a little infection under the nail. Probably good to see a doctor for an antibiotic at this point.
you might of cut it at the quick and not known now its infected... you should go to the doctor to get anti-inflammatorys and if u live in ireland go to primacare in maynooth coz im really bored!!
maybe you've got a pimple under there
Just let it grow out
go to the doctor.
