Why do nail beds have a blood flow?

I cut my toenail too short and it bled.. I always believed nailbeds were just skin with a nail growing over it.Why do nail beds have a blood flow?
nail beds are where the cells of the nail originate. Eventually the newer cells push out the older cells (that consist the longer portions of your nail) These older cells die and therefore do not need nourishment. However, the new cells that are generating in the nail bed do need mourishment, and that comes from the blood supply
