I broke the top part of my thumbnail over the nail bed (pink part). I trimmed it down a bit, but there's still a loose piece that sits on top of the nail bed. I'm afraid to cut it off because I don't want to expose the pink part.
Should I just do it anyway?
What happens if I just leave it there for a few weeks and somehow manage not to snag it on anything? Will it grow to the point where i can cut it off without exposing the nail bed? Or will it somehow ruin the nail growing process?Exposing Nail Bed?
No, I don't think it's a good idea to expose the bed of your nail. It might be painful and it's a very sensitive part of your nail. I suspect your nail will eventually turn dark and come off eventually, due to the injury. If not, it might grow on out and you might be able to keep it trimmed down until it grows off. Good luck with your nail! JanExposing Nail Bed?
If there is a loose piece, go ahead and cut it off. If you leave it on chances are good that it'll get infected. Now after you do that, you should wash your hands with warm soapy water, dry them well, then apply something like Neosporin to the nail with the problem and put a bandaide over it to keep it clean. Repeat this process 2 times a day for a week or so, so that your nail can have a chance to grow back healthy and free from potential infections. I this helps, I've broken my big toe's nail off once and it was not so fun... eeep
