Yes that's a cause of ridges on the nail, usually due to eczema around the cuticle or sometimes just by banging your hand on something/shutting fingers in a door that sort of thing to bruise the nail bed which is just below your nail at the top of your finger. If it's standard damage like that then it will grow out, if it's eczema or similar skin complaint then it will stop the nail ridging a few weeks after the finger has healed. You can buff ridges out in the meantime but make sure you use a soft buffer not abrasive file which can cause more damage.
